Letter from Gramps to Jo before her wedding

 December 1996

My darling Joanne,

I really cannot express to you in words how much your request that I escort you to the altar on your wedding day has meant to me; although, naturally, I am so very sad that your Dad can’t do it, as I know how proud he would have felt.

It’s impossible to describe how much you have meant to me over these last ten years since Gran and I came to S.A. To have the privilege to see you mature from a sweet 15 year old to the lovely young woman you are today has been, for me, something I shall treasure forever. Your sweetness and the loving care you have shown to my beloved Dorothy and me has been incredible. I truly believe that the bond of love between us three has been unshakeable. Jesse and I are certain we have all benefited from the loving association.

It is a particular joy to us that the man you are to share your life with — your Johnny — is, in our opinion, a real WINNER. Having known him now for some 2 years or so, we both admire, respect, and love him; and we feel certain you will find great joy together.

My one and only plea to you both is that you always SHOW your love to each other. I know, my darling Joanne, that you are not like me — you need to leave your heart unguarded. Please, again like me, you are ready to SHOW your love.

I truly believe that this is one of the main pillars of a loving relationship.

Thank you, my beloved Joanne, for 14 years of great joy brought to me by your loving affection and gentle caring.

May you and your dear Anthony have a wonderful marriage.

Your very own,

Gramps
